How many gallons of paint does it take to paint the average home? What if your home were the White House? Continued from our other post on the history of house painting, we're revealing more unique facts about the widely unknown world of paint. 


Check out these final five facts below:


#1. It takes 570 gallons of paint to cover the exterior of the White House in Washington D.C.

 

(We bet your house doesn’t take even half that much.)

 

#2. From San Diego painting companies to DIYers across the country, more than 1.57 billion gallons of paint are sold in the U.S. every year. 

 

#3. Speaking of a lot of paint, approximately 65 gallons of those 1.57 billion are thrown away every year. 

 

Did you know that latex paint is disposable while oil-based paint is considered household hazardous waste? 


If you’re not sure where to dispose of old or unused oil-based paint, look to your local household hazardous waste facility or another state-approved drop off center.

 

#4. There are only three colors than cannot be created by mixing together other colors.

 

Deemed the primary colors, these three are red, blue and yellow. 

 

#5. Taking up over 5,000 square feet of ceiling space, the Sistine Chapel took Michelangelo Buonarroti over four years to paint. 

 

Started in 1508, this fresco painting is composed of over 300 figures.
